ESD Lifetime Director David M. Munson
Staff

The following message was sent to members of the ESD community earlier this afternoon.

With deep sadness and appreciation for his life, we write with the news that David M. Munson, one of the founding benefactors of The Episcopal School of Dallas, has died. David’s mentorship of Father Swann and his support of ESD were foundational to who we have become. Faculty member Eddie Eason, who began his career at ESD in August of 1981, notes: “Father Swann not only surrounded himself with great academicians who were excellent decision-makers, his mentors in life were phenomenal, especially David Munson.”

In 1977 Father Swann wrote, “Your desire to participate in the founding of ESD is a contribution to this city and the standard of excellence in education envisioned by the Board of Directors. Your continued support and good will illuminate my desire to hold fast to our heritage as God’s people. May we always remember that God’s presence and love is the catalyst for all learning and growth.”

In honor of Mr. Munson’s dedication to ESD, which spanned nearly five decades, the school annually presents the David M. Munson Loyalty Award to the graduating senior who embodies the virtues he modeled. Mr. Munson’s influence on ESD includes his foresight in 1984 to purchase the 13.6 acres of land on the north side of Merrell Road to develop athletic fields and his generous and consistent contributions to financial aid for students who matriculated to ESD from St. Philip's School.

As we celebrate the profound contributions of David and his wife, Mona, we also remember those who carry on his legacy at ESD and beyond. David is survived by his three children, David Munson Jr, Charlie Munson, and John Munson ‘83, as well as his eight grandchildren: Isabel ’12, Luke, Boone, Campbell ’16, Ellie, Linley, Miles, and Lance. The memorial honoring David will be held Friday, August 4, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at Saint Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church.

The ESD community embraces the Munson family with love and support during this difficult time. As we hold them in our hearts and prayers, we commend the following prayer adapted from page 494 of the Book of Common Prayer:

O God, whose beloved Son took children into his arms and blessed them: Give us grace to entrust David to your never-failing care and love, as you embrace him in your eternal life. Deal graciously with his family and loved ones in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come. Amen.

May grace and peace and hope abide with you,

David L. Baad
