Checkmate! Chess Team Secures Second Place - The Episcopal School of Dallas | Best Private Schools in Dallas

January 28, 2025

The ESD Chess Team competed in the 2025 TCA Region III Chess Tournament on January 25, 2025, finishing second overall in the High School Championship division.

The students who represented ESD were Harrison Adams '26, Truitt Baker '26, Chaz Frederiksen '26, Fernando Gomez-Quinonez '25, and Rohit Gundluru '26. Fernando, in particular, had a stellar performance, placing third overall individually in a tough field featuring a FIDE master!

Travis Gilmore, Chess Club sponsor and upper school history and religion teacher expressed how proud he was of this team, saying, “My general philosophy is that at least one of two things will happen when you play chess: you either win or you learn something. No matter what, you’re always getting better, and I’m just so proud of them because it can be a difficult game.” Gilmore said, “When you approach it with humility, you can learn so much. It’s always so rewarding.”

The tournament is split into two competitions, highlighting both the individual and the team. If a player wins a game, they score one point. If they lose the game, they score zero points; a draw constitutes half a point for both players. Each player’s individual scores tally the team’s overall score.

Please congratulate these Eagles on a job well done!
