Honoring Traditions and Celebrating Life: ESD Observes Día de los Muertos

October 31, 2024

At The Episcopal School of Dallas, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is observed yearly with a meaningful blend of cultural education, creativity, and community spirit. The altar, lovingly set up by Spanish teacher Marcela Garcini, serves as the heart of this celebration, featuring vibrant decorations and personalized projects created by students across various grade levels.

This year, each Spanish class had a unique contribution to add to the altar. Ninotchka Beavers’ Level 3 classes created thoughtful shoebox ofrendas (offerings) dedicated to departed loved ones, while her Level 1 class crafted beautiful paper altars. Mrs. Beavers' Level 4 and 5 students brought humor and art together by designing calacas (skulls) adorned with satirical poems, a playful nod to traditional Día de los Muertos celebrations.

In Ms. Garcini’s class, students painted colorful calaveras (skulls), embodying the bright artistry associated with the holiday. Middle school students under the guidance of Ms. Dena contributed intricately designed banners to decorate the tables, and the eighth graders worked together to create paper flowers that added vibrant color to the display.

In the lower school, students joined in by coloring calavera pages and bringing photos of loved ones displayed on the altar in the chapel. This gathering of students' artwork and personal touches brought an authentic and thoughtful celebration to ESD, reflecting the spirit of Día de los Muertos—a holiday to remember, honor, and celebrate the lives of those who have passed.

Día de los Muertos at ESD is more than just a holiday; it’s a shared experience that brings our community closer, honoring diverse traditions and fostering an appreciation for cultural heritage across all ages.
