Lower School Explores the Traditions of Rosh Hashanah, Welcoming the Jewish New Year

As the sun set this weekend to mark the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, our campus community paused to reflect on the traditions, warmth, and spirit of renewal surrounding the Jewish New Year.
Last week, Lower School students gathered in chapel for a special presentation hosted by the Thomas family (P’36,’40). The visiting guests walked our youngest Eagles through the rich heritage of the holiday, introducing them to beloved customs that bring families together each autumn.
Students discovered the meaning behind dipped apples and honey; they represent a sweet and symbolic gesture wishing loved ones a joyful year ahead. Students also practiced delivering the traditional greeting, "Shanah Tovah," which translates to "a good year."
A highlight of the morning came when a third-grade student shared their family’s shofar, a traditional ram’s horn sounded throughout the holiday as an inspiring call to reflection, mindfulness, and community connection.
A Blessing for the New Year
“Blessed are You, Lord our God, Sovereign of the Universe who has granted us life, who has sustained us and who has enabled us to reach this festive occasion. We ask your blessing upon our Jewish sisters and brothers as they celebrate Rosh Hashanah this year. Use this holy time to draw them near to you, to inscribe their names in the Book of Life, and to fill their homes with peace, prosperity, and joy. All this we ask for the sake of your Love. Amen.”
