Learning About Our Community Helpers in Our Beginner Classes
February 9, 2026
Throughout the month of January, our Beginner students explored an engaging unit focused on community helpers — the individuals who work every day to keep our communities safe, healthy, and strong! Through hands-on experiences and real-world connections, students developed a deeper understanding of the many ways people serve and support others.
To bring this lesson to life, they welcomed several special guests from both the ESD and greater Dallas communities. Students met real firefighters, police officers, security officers, a dentist, and a nurse who shared about their important roles and daily responsibilities. Our Talon Security team invited students to learn more about how campus safety is maintained, while officers from the Dallas Police Department visited campus with live police horses! Firefighters also provided an up-close look at their fire truck and equipment, including an exciting fire hose demonstration that gave students a firsthand view of how they respond in emergencies.
Alongside these visits, students explored a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts centered on community helpers to build background knowledge and strengthen early literacy skills. They also participated in guided dramatic role-play experiences, allowing them to step into these community helper roles through imaginative, hands-on learning.
This unit offered our youngest students a rich blend of academic learning, creativity, and real-world connections. We loved seeing their curiosity grow as they discovered how many people work together to support and protect our community — and we are grateful to all of our visitors who helped make this month such a special and impactful learning experience.
