Faculty Art Show Brings Independent School Artists Together

The creative work of an art teacher does not stop when the school day ends. This fall, ESD’s Faculty Art Show is highlighting that idea with Artist as Teacher/Teacher as Artist, an exhibition featuring visual arts faculty from ESD alongside art educators from several Dallas Independent Schools.
The exhibition, currently on display in the Jennifer and John Eagle Gallery inside The Susan M. Frank Center for Arts & Humanities, brings together artists from The Episcopal School of Dallas, The Hockaday School, Ursuline Academy of Dallas, Parish Episcopal School, The Winston School, and St. Mark’s School of Texas. Their work offers a glimpse into the creative practices and passions that inform their teaching and continue beyond the school day.
While ESD’s Faculty Art Show has remained a part of the school’s visual arts programming, this year’s exhibition marks the return of its Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) faculty collaboration. ESD last hosted the interschool faculty art invitation in 2015, followed by Parish Episcopal School in 2017. The ESD Art Around Campus Committee saw an opportunity to revive the collaboration this year, reconnecting visual arts educators from across the DallasIndependent School community.
The renewed collaboration reflects the spirit behind Artist as Teacher/Teacher as Artist: Teachers are not only guiding students through the creative process, but are artists themselves, continually exploring ideas, mediums, and new ways of seeing.
The exhibition offers an opportunity for visitors to experience the work of these educators beyond their classrooms while celebrating the creativity and connection that make the visual arts an important part of school communities. For ESD students, the exhibition provides another opportunity to see their teachers’ creative work and to recognize the artistic practices that shape the learning taking place in the classroom. For the participating schools, it offers a chance to reconnect, share creative work, and celebrate the visual arts educators who inspire the next generation of artists.
