Curtis Mathes '27 Leads the Way for the ESD Eagles - The Episcopal School of Dallas | Best Private Schools in Dallas

September 30, 2025

The Episcopal School of Dallas's junior class is fostering leaders who don't just step up—they embrace the extraordinary. As a school committed to student leadership, we believe the true measure of student life is seen in those who exemplify dedication beyond the classroom, and Curtis Mathes ’27 is a prime example.

In a recent profile, People Newspapers detailed the immense, selfless workload Mathes has willingly taken on this season after a significant roster turnover. Mathes has anchored the team, not only as a standout receiver but also as the only returning offensive starter. His versatility is further proven by his critical roles as a starting safety on defense and a core member of special teams.

His commitment to excellence is a true testament to the character we cultivate. Aware that his opportunities for rest would be minimal, Mathes spent the entire offseason intensely focused on improving his agility and strength. Beyond the physical preparation, Mathes was also building the mental endurance and conditioning necessary to play the sport, creating a strong psychological readiness for the current season. Head Coach Richard Williams praised this ability, noting that Curtis possesses one of the highest football IQs on the team and is contributing in all three phases of the game.

Mathes attributes his successes to a foundation of deep connection; he enjoys a seamless chemistry with junior quarterback Miles Link ’27, who has been his close friend since first grade. Furthermore, the Mathes name itself carries a proud legacy, and Curtis is now channeling that heritage to set a new high standard as ESD aims to bounce back from last season.

Curtis’s ability to fill so many roles while setting a standard for his peers embodies the values of leadership we champion through our Student Life programs. We are immensely proud of his efforts to lead by example and inspire those around him. As Coach Williams noted, "The future is extremely bright for him."
