Before and After School Programs
Lower School | Middle School
Learning, exploration, and community building extend beyond the school day with ESD+, offering before and after school extended day care and extracurricular programs. Designed to complement rather than duplicate the school day, ESD+ offers students the opportunity to unwind and explore with friends in a safe and loving environment.
Programs for students ages 3 through grade 4 are held in the Lower School; Programs for students in grades 5-8 are located in the school house. All programs are facilitated by ESD faculty and staff.
Overview
Serving our youngest learners from Beginner to Fourth Grade, ESD+ strives to offer programs that encourage students to make connections, ask questions, solve problems, and think independently. Consistent with our curricular philosophy, ESD+ programs are guided by the belief that active, hands-on experiences make learning meaningful for young children.
Before and After School Programs
Before and after school programs are interest-based activities for Lower School students that meet weekly and enroll at the start of each semester in August and December. A printable calendar view of offerings can be found here. If you have any questions, please contact Marlene Rizo, Interim Auxiliary Programs Coordinator.

Under the direction of Zora Skelton, Math Coach and Brenda Wilder, fourth grade math teacher, students will prepare for monthly Olympiad contests. These problems require a combination of grade-appropriate math skills and deductive reasoning. Students will practice individually, with partners or with teams to solve these logic and reasoning questions in preparation for the monthly contests. This is not a competition, but rather an opportunity to challenge students to higher level thinking. Math Olympiads is an excellent option for students seeking a challenge as well as those who might need an added mathematical boost.

The purpose of the Family Tree/Genealogy Club is to assist students in finding out more about their family histories: who their ancestors were, what region of the country their families are from, and how we are more similar than different in regard to the movement of people. I will share my knowledge and skills on how to do genealogy research and build a personalized family tree. With my assistance, each student will work on their personal genealogical research and family tree.

Table Top Gaming with Goetsch
Join ESD’s eighth-grade science teacher (and gamer), Mr. Goetsch, as you explore the fun of modern-day tabletop gaming. His collection of over 250 tabletop games includes dexterity games such as Loopin’ Louie, Pitch Car, Crossbows & Catapults, and Crokinole; dice games such as Martian Dice, Perudo, and Dungeon Roll; cooperative games such as Pandemic, Hanabi, and Forbidden Island; card games such as Dominion, Race for the Galaxy, Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game, Munchkin, Little Devils; and board games such as Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Puerto Rico, and Homesteaders.
While tabletop games are both entertaining and fun, they are also premier tools for teaching strategic thinking, foreseeing consequences, weighing options and making decisions. Furthermore, these games teach higher-level thinking skills such as the ability to visualize, analyze, and think critically. Students will have mini-lessons on strategy and take one another on head-to-head.

For Teacher-led programming, the cost can be found in the program description above. If you have questions about financial assistance, please contact Shelle Montgomery, Director of Tuition Assistance.
For student-lead clubs, there is no cost.
How to Start A Club
Students wishing to form or lead their own clubs are encouraged to do so after reaching out to Meg Fahrenbrook '01, Assistant Head of Middle School or Jonathan Chein, Head of Middle School, for approval.
After receiving approval and working out the details of the club, students are encouraged to find a Faculty Advisor that will help organize and plan. Student-led clubs are free and the faculty advisor supervises the activities but does not plan or lead the club.
Extended Day
Extended day provides a monitored time and space, before and after school, for students to engage in a variety of activities such as working on homework with classmates, playing board games, meeting with teachers, playing outside in the Gaga Ball pit, watching MS athletic events, and attending club meetings. These activities allow students to socialize and become acquainted with members of their class, forming bonds that foster inclusivity. There is no charge to participate in this program.

Policy on Sign-In and Pick-Up
Sign-In:
- Grades 5 and 6 are required to sign in by 4:00 p.m.
- Grades 7 and 8 are required to sign in by 4:30 p.m. after sports, and by 4:00 p.m. on days without sports.
Pick-Up:
- As part of our campus safety procedures, parents must park, enter, and sign students out between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
- Students not picked up by 6:00 p.m. will be under the supervision of Campus Security. Multiple pick-ups after 6:00 p.m. may result in a student's exclusion from the After School Care Program.
- If Middle School students have a Lower School sibling attending the Kids on Campus After School Program, the primary pick-up point for both Middle and Lower School siblings after 4:00 p.m. will be Lower School. Lower School will notify Middle School of your arrival, and your student will be sent to you.
Cell Phone Free Zone
The Middle School years are a critical developmental stage for students and interacting with one another, face to face, is an essential part of that development. For that reason, students in grades 5-7 are not allowed to carry cell phones. Eighth-graders may bring phones but they must remain off and stored in their lockers until after the school day. They must remain out of sight in community spaces unless there is a direct communication happening about pick-up.
We do understand this creates a challenge for some families and we understand the tremendous responsibility it puts on the School to communicate schedule changes to students in a timely manner. The tremendous learning benefits created by limiting access to smart devices during the academic day far outweigh these hurdles and we are committed to partnering with families as they manage complex schedules with many moving parts.
