Lower School Computer Lab

First Grade

First graders come to the Teaching Computer Lab weekly to begin building their technology toolbox of skills that will follow them throughout their years at ESD.

Second Grade

Second graders begin to learn proper typing techniques this year. In addition, students complete an integrated unit on the Ice Age and design an illustrated project on an animal from that period.

Projects in computer class involve a collaboration between the classroom studies and technology applications.

During Favorite Book Week, students design bookmarks for their favorite books in Microsoft Publisher. These are shared with all Lower School students through a donation to our Library.

Third Grade

Third grade students focus on becoming proficient typists. They explore various technologies while integrating units. Students utilize NEO portable keyboards in the classroom to enhance the integration experience.

Additionally, students utilize Google Apps for Education, Schoology, Microsoft Office programs and other web tools to develop research and presentation skills.

Fourth Grade

Fourth graders review typing skills and begin to explore effective internet research skills with a Science/Language Arts/Social studies/Technology integrated unit on Inventions.

They follow up with research projects on integrated units covering Texas Regions, and Cultures of people who relocated to Texas in the early years of our country.

Additionally, students learn basic programming and robotics utilizing programs such as Scratch, Lego WeDo and Microworlds.

Competitions

Second, Third and Fourth Grade students compete in the Hour of Code challenge in the fall and the World Education week competition in the spring.

Students test their science, spelling and math fact knowledge and keyboard proficiency enabling them to compete in real time fact practice against students from schools around the world.

Global Focus

This year our Global Focus for Lower School grades will be to collaborate on projects with schools from around the world. Classes will engage in class meetings to discuss Global issues and how they are able to make a difference in our world.

Third grade students will research environmental issues and will offer presentations to the community to inform us how we can care for our world.
