HISTORY

Beginner

Beginner students explore families and friends! They are learning to navigate their own world by learning to share, taking turns, waiting patiently and growing independence.

Pre-Kindergarten

Pre-K students explore the world outside their window, they are beginning to see beyond themselves and are curious about the community that surrounds them. Growing independence, gaining skills in cooperation and communication, learning to navigate conflict on their own.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten begins in Dallas, travels across Texas and then takes off to explore the great architectural wonders of the world. They make discoveries, recreate models of monuments, and learn about cultures and customs around the world.

Primer

Primer students explore the world around them through integrated units based on specific themes driven by student curiosity.

First Grade

First graders lives build around their theme of Community. Community in their classroom, at their grade level, in their school, and in their city of Dallas.

Second Grade

Migration is the theme in our second grade social studies curriculum. Students learn about world geography as they explore animal migration, human migration, and future migration.

Third Grade

The Journey is the theme for our historians in third grade. Students learn about American geography as they explore the 50 states via The Great American Road Trip, and they explore Westward Expansion in America as they live life on the Oregon Trail.

Fourth Grade

For the oldest students in our Lower School, Leadership is the theme of their fourth grade year, and it is through this theme that students explore Texas history.

Fifth Grade

Ancient Civilizations with geographic and cultural focus on Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome; Exploration of the impact of culture on life and society; Roots of Western Civilization and influence on present day.

Sixth Grade

Founding of America through present day, including Thirteen Colonies, Constitution, Revolution, Civil War, Reconstruction, Western Expansion, Civil Rights, WWII and Cold War); Trip to Washington, D.C. supports firsthand learning.

Seventh Grade

Five themes of World Geography (location, place, human/environmental interaction, movement, region) and associated vocabulary; Specific focus on Asia and Latin American to connect essential components of ancient and modern civilization; Data interpretation from visual formats and primary sources. Claim, evidence, reasoning framework to write historical essay including theme development and use of multiple sources (primary and secondary).

Eighth Grade

Middle Ages, Renaissance, Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust and Civil Rights with focus on the "upstanders" who impacted history; Analyze and interpret historical documents, acquire cultural literacy and consider alternate perspectives.

Ninth Grade

In World Cultures, students will explore the major world religions and learn about how geography and history have influenced the development and continued growth of these religions.

Tenth Grade

In World History, students will cover the major developments since the Renaissance. Rather than focusing only on Western Europe, the global nature of the text allows students to see how events, trends, and ideas from all parts of the world interact and affect people wherever they live.

Eleventh Grade

United States History is a survey of the major social, cultural, political, and economic developments in the United States from colonial times to the present.

Twelfth Grade

ESD offers a number of electives to fill the school's graduation requirement for government.
