Summer break is a perfect chance to explore interests and read freely and for fun! The ESD Lower School Library does not coordinate a specific required reading program over the summer, but would highly recommend checking out your local public library’s summer reading program for reading encouragement and a variety of excellent programs. Barnes and Noble and Half Price books coordinate their own summer reading programs as well.

I know many families use the summer to participate in the Flying Angel and The Bluebonnet Challenge reading programs. However, these two programs are taking the summer off to be reworked a bit. That doesn’t mean there’s no reading options though! Your student has been sent home with a BINGO card and a scavenger hunt. Students who complete 10 activities (2 bingos) will get a small prize at the start of the school year, 20 activities (4 bingos) will get a medium prize, and students completing 25+ (blackout) will get a large prize. Please use these as a fun way to read a variety of materials in a variety of places, and remember to check the library course in Schoology for great reading recommendations.

For more child-specific recommendation lists, Ms. Barnes ( and Mrs. Pemberton ( are more than happy to help you find some great titles and authors to explore!
