MyESD: A TRIBUTE TO THE ESD EXPERIENCE

Seniors in the Class of 2019 are sharing some of their top learning experiences. No doubt, a difficult choice!

In 2018, seniors offered their favorite spots around campus.

Check back each week for a new post!

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Fishing in the Quarry

Fishing in the quarry really became popular my sophomore year. It was a great way to take a break from the business of the school day, catch up with friends, and enjoy the beautiful quarry here on campus. It was so great to have time to fish, a hobby of mine that I usually didn't I have much time for because of schoolwork. I was even able to make some new friends, and we would meet every Friday morning, before school, to go fishing.

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Spring Musicals

I would have to say my favorite ESD experiences have been all of the spring musicals. The high school spring musicals are great bonding experiences. As a senior, I have gotten to know all of my classmates fairly well but the musical is what has really brought me close to those I was not as familiar with throughout middle school and high school. Finally as a senior this year I have the honor of playing the starring role as “Jo” in Little Women. It’s been a long ride and it’s my last hoorah but it’s already been one for the books. ESD as a whole has always been my family, but the arts department at ESD is comprised of long-lasting, deep kinships that will last even after graduation.

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: SINGING IN CHAPEL

I love singing and choir gives me an outlet to not only pursue my passion but create beautiful music with people I love. My favorite activity with choir is singing in chapel everyday. It is a time where I can relax from the chaos of the school day.

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: World Cultures Class

My freshman year world cultures class was my favorite class at ESD because it encourages the sharing of everyone’s conflicting opinions. Not only would we learn about different cultures but also discuss them in detail. It was a great preparation for the rest of my high school experience.

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Homecoming Pep Rally

My favorite experience was our Homecoming pep rally at the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Stadium this year. A drum line, the cheerleaders, football players, and ESD wingmen led the whole school out to the football field for the pep rally. It was our first pep rally ever that was outdoors and that also included the middle school students. The whole school had so much fun together and it was really special!

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Varsity Soccer

One of my favorite experiences at ESD was becoming part of the Varsity Soccer team my freshman year. As a new member, the entire team made me feel part of the soccer family. I remember how James McElroy, David Kerrigan and Jake Colonnetta were extremely encouraging when I was stepping on the field. I am grateful that Coach Garner gave me this opportunity. Since then, I always play my hardest on the field.

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Senior Retreat

Every time we take a class trip out there, it is always a relaxing break away from the craziness of school. Every trip is meaningful and integrates all of the gifts that Wolf Run has to offer. Not only have I been out on class trips, but I also have gone out there the last two summers for our football retreat. It's a place of unity, and being away from the city for a couple of hours or even days is comforting.
- Jack

I got to know people in my grade that I hadn’t really known as well before and it has truly made this year so much fun. The lectures from Mr. Heil and Mr. Baad really helped us understand the role we have as seniors. I feel like going on this retreat really helped our grade come together as one. I am so happy that we had this opportunity to spend time with each other and become closer.

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: ETHICS CLASS

My favorite experience at ESD is my Ethics with Mr. Cupp, because each day has been filled with discussions where I could share my opinions on various ethical frameworks or scenarios while having my prior beliefs challenged by my classmates. Mr. Cupp helped facilitate the most meaningful conversations where I began to challenge how I came to the decisions I made in the past and how I would like to make decisions in the future.

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: LESSONS AND CAROLS

Performing at Lessons and Carols is special because we are able to use our talent to give back to the ESD community and connect them with the holiday. - Emma

O Holy Night is a very important part of the Lessons and Carols tradition at ESD, so when Mr Snyder asked Emma and I to sing it together, I was more than happy to oblige. It's a very special experience for an outgoing senior, and I think it's especially appreciated by the senior class, as it's almost a representation of the class itself. - Christopher

TOP LEARNING EXPERIENCE: AP RESEARCH CLASS

AP research with Dr. Boberg has been my favorite class at ESD. I love AP Research because it allows me to formulate my own opinions and argue my ideas freely. In class, we get to create our own research project and conduct a study, which has the potential to be published. The class is really intriguing and keeps me on my toes on a day-to-day basis.
