WELCOME ESD CLASS OF 2023!
We would love for you and your student to join us for one of our oldest and most valued traditions, Pass It On. Many of you may have heard this referenced during a campus visit/admission event. If not, we would like to provide a little background as well as ceremony details if you are interested in attending.
Background on Pass It On:
In the spring of 1976, Father Swann directed the faculty to create a ceremony that reverently symbolized eighth graders moving on to Upper School. The faculty created what is now known as Pass It On in which the oldest grade level in the Upper School passes the light, “the spirit of ESD,” to the rising freshman class. Seniors (Class of 2019) light their candle from the primary ESD candle and then light the candle of a rising freshman (Class of 2023), thereby welcoming them to Upper School.
Date: Wednesday, May 1, 2019
Time: Ceremony starts at 2:45 p.m.** followed by a reception for Class of 2023 from 3:30 - 4:00 p.m.
Where: ESD, Competition Gym (upstairs)
Details for new families:
This is the first year that we will be including our new students and families, as well as the first year we have held a reception for the current 8th grade class.
Please know that although this is a very special tradition, the students walk-in as a whole and are not individually named or called when they move forward to have their candle lit (you can watch the Youtube video linked below to get an idea). We would love for as many of our newly admitted students to participate, but in no way expect most to be present or to travel or change existing plans. There will be many opportunities to connect with classmates in the coming months.
If you would like to get a feel for the ceremony, you can view a past ceremony (from 2016) here.
If your student would like to participate, there are a few things to note:
- Students would need to be at ESD no later then 2:00 p.m.** that day
- Students would need to be in ESD formal uniform (see pic below...grey slacks/white button down/navy blazer for boys, preferably with an ESD tie that is available in the Eagles Nest) but we can be flexible on that part. The girls will be more difficult since they will require an ESD skirt in addition to the navy blazer and white button down. Our Uniform Resale will be restocked as soon as Seniors are done and/or summer closet clean out begins; and there will be plenty of opportunity to stock up for school, but please know we are low on skirts at the moment. We would be happy to pull or borrow a skirt if your daughter wants to participate in the ceremony. Please let me know waist size as soon as possible so that I can start working on options. Any navy blazer will work, there are some currently in Used Uniforms and we also have families that have had luck at the Salvation Army resale on Inwood Road (apparently they have a complete wall of navy blazers) if you would like to purchase a gently used blazer versus new. Mills Uniform is our provider and you can access their information here.
- We need RSVPs no later than April 24th so that we can work on matching Seniors to Class of 2023. Please email email@example.com with number attending.
We understand this is a LOT of information. Please reach out to Cindy Newsom if you have any questions. Again, please do not feel it is necessary or mandatory to be here but know we would love to have you if it works for your schedule.
