Ciao

Teacher Author: Mrs. Kharrat, French

Today during the World Languages and Cultures Club, we had our culminating activity for our study of Italian: an Italian-themed food tasting (pizza, gelato, San Pellegrino sparkling water, biscotti, and vanilla wafers) accompanied by classical Italian orchestra music, followed by Andrea Boccelli. I love all of the fun things we’re doing in clubs and student organizations.

Honors Spanish IV

Student Author: Biz Newsom '20

Today in Honors Spanish IV, we had a debate to focus on our speaking skills. Our teacher, Señor Gonzalez, enjoys teaching us ways to apply Spanish in our own lives, and we learned how to communicate and use all of the Spanish we have learned in previous years. I enjoy this class because he approaches learning in a different way.

I Scream for ICEEs

Student Author: Abby Brand '20

Football players and cheerleaders road-tripped all the way to Houston Friday night. Coincidentally, the buses were perfectly timed for all of us to get Buccee’s at the same time. It was so fun and was my favorite part about the road trip!

Today in SMIF club (Student Managed Investment Fund), Mr. Mark Freeman came to talk to us about different strategies and forms of investing. Mr. Freeman is the CIO of Westwood, an investment firm that has over $20 billion in holdings. SMIF is one of the most unique organizations at ESD. Each year, the entirely student-run organization invests $50,000 of ESD’s actual endowment money, hoping to create a portfolio that grows the account. Last year, we made a profit of over $5,000!

Summer Reading Learnings

Student Author: Penelope North '21

Today in Honors English II with Mrs. Cullins, we participated in a Socratic Seminar. That means that we each went on to say different statements about our two summer reading books, 1984 and A Brave New World, and we were forced to think deeper into the meanings of the books. We had to connect our thoughts to the modern day world which was hard but it was interesting to hear other people’s thoughts and predictions as to what the world will come to in the next few decades. It was a great learning experience and I learned more about the past, and possible future, of humanity.

Lemons into Lemonade

Student Author: Ashley Carter '19

We love how beautiful and open our school is, but sometimes it gets very rainy in Texas, meaning we get soaked walking from place to place! But it’s all good, we’re turning lemons into lemonade!
