Saturday Strings Success!

Faculty Author: Mr. Demian, Strings Teacher

On Saturday, we had a record number of ESD Strings students participating in the TPSMEA North Region Solo and Ensemble Festival at Greenhill School. We presented 12 solos and 1 ensemble and were awarded eight 1st ratings and five 2nd ratings. Most numbers of entries from ESD in previous years were three students! Two 1st ratings were from the Lower School: Elaine and Oliver, both second grade; five from the Middle School: Jamie, Samuel, Samantha in fifth grade, Ellie and Henry in seventh grade; and one from the Upper School: Jiaying Fu, ninth grade.

Here is a picture of the eighth-grade ensemble who participated and was awarded a 2nd rating for their piece. Keep up the great work everyone!

4th Grade Visit to Merrell Road

Faculty Author: Office of Admission

Our Fourth Graders are having fun learning about Fifth Grade at the Middle and Upper School Campus and eating lunch with their fifth-grade buddies! They are so excited to be here next year and become big middle schoolers. We also had multiple siblings that were united on one campus! When asked what they loved about their visit today, they said:
"It’s really fun"
"More freedom"
"It’s really big"
"Food is amazing!"
"More classrooms and teachers"
"Have more options and choices"
"Love how you have chickens"

Augmented Reality Sandbox

Student Author: Biz Newsom '20

After our lab yesterday in Chemistry, we got to look at the augmented reality sandbox that was built by Dr. Hull’s husband for the sixth graders who are learning about topography and contour lines. It is used to show topography and precipitation using sand mixed with cornstarch. I found it very impressive that he built this considering that it takes special code and there are very few in the country!

For more info, watch one of the following YouTube videos. The first such sandboxes were developed by researchers at UC-Davis.
