Augmented Reality Sandbox

Student Author: Biz Newsom '20

After our lab yesterday in Chemistry, we got to look at the augmented reality sandbox that was built by Dr. Hull’s husband for the sixth graders who are learning about topography and contour lines. It is used to show topography and precipitation using sand mixed with cornstarch. I found it very impressive that he built this considering that it takes special code and there are very few in the country!

For more info, watch one of the following YouTube videos. The first such sandboxes were developed by researchers at UC-Davis.

Blast from the Past

Student Author: Ty Johnson '20

Yesterday in Mr. Fiala’s Photography II Alternative Processes class, we learned how to use a 'View' camera so we could start our Found Objects assignment. We were assigned to bring something special from our childhood to class. In the picture, you can see that Gianna Pope ‘19 brought a rose frozen into a container.

Second Annual ESD Film Festival

Student Author: Ty Johnson '20

Last weekend, ESD held its second annual Film Festival in the Bray Theater! The film festival showed many of the films that the students of the class worked very hard on throughout the year. The event is also used to give awards like 'Best Editor', 'Best Producer,' 'Best Screenwriter', etc. It is always a fun event that all ESD students and parents can participate in!

Say (Aca) What?!

Student Author: Alexandra Everbach '19

This year, ESD started its first ever A cappella Club! We are slowly growing and right now we have about 15 full-time members. We plan to sing in Town Hall in February. It is run by Freshman Ava Thompson and our ESD Choir teacher, Mr. Snyder. We love dedicating our break times each week to make beautiful music!

Welcome, Second Semester!

Student Author: Abby Brand '20

The first day of semester two was freezing but successful! Some classes at ESD are only one semester, so after completing mobile apps in first semester, I had my first class of sculpture. We started molding out of cardboard for our first project!

Officer Jody Challenges Upper School Robotics

Faculty Author: Mr. Burnett, Engineering and Robotics

Pictured here are Upper School students working on a real search and rescue robot (SAR) for the ESD Security Department to really be used at school at the request of our very own Officer Jody. One class was able to get a working body up a test bed for the final version. The other class was able to develop a robotic arm up for testing. The two classes combined so the system could be put together as one for the first time. Both classes accomplished something different that together made it complete. Officer Jody observed as the students explored with whether or not they could use the iPad as part of the robot control system.
