Not just one but BOTH ESD Lacrosse teams are 2019 THSLL State Champions!
These two teams are no strangers to the Texas High School Lacrosse State Championships. The women’s team last won the championship in 2017, with the men’s team taking the title last in 2014. Although both teams have advanced to the championships the last several years, this is the first year both teams have won the title. For ESD, these victories were a way to avenge themselves of their earlier losses to these teams in the regular season.
The women’s team beat Lamar Arlington 14-11 in the quarterfinal and then St. John's Episcopal School 18-7 on Saturday to advance to the final on Sunday. The team then beat Kinkaid - who bested ESD 11-10 in the SPC Championship - in the state championships 14-8. In the state final, ESD consistently held a lead for five or more goals.
"We have had tremendous leadership from our senior class,'' Coach Maggie Koch said. "We've had players sacrifice for the good of the team. The chemistry has been excellent from day one.''
The regular season saw the men’s team lose to The Woodlands, Jesuit, and Highland Park. The playoffs, however, were all about unfinished business. They took down all three of those teams in a row, ultimately beating Highland Park 9-6 to claim the championship. In the final, ESD dominated the second half, coming back from down 3-4 at half.
"So proud of these guys. 2019 D1 Texas State Champions! Big thanks to the players, coaches, parents, ESD athletic support staff, athletic trainers, ESD Administration, and student body," Coach Jay Sothoron said. "We could not have done it without you."
We are so proud of these student-athletes on these tremendous accomplishments. Congratulations to the coaches and players for your outstanding season. Go Eagles!
