ESD Names New School Chaplain

In a letter to the ESD community yesterday, Head of School Dave Baad announced Tim Kennedy as school chaplain:

April 11, 2019

Dear Families,

I am pleased to announce that Tim Kennedy will serve as school chaplain for grades 7 through 12, starting August 2019. The Reverend Amy G. Heller remains our senior chaplain and a member of ESD's executive leadership team; she will be serving Beginners through 6th grade. Both will share ministry in the Middle School.

Tim embodies the servant leadership and faith-informed qualities essential for the school chaplain position. He brings an infectious energy to his ministry that draws in young people. Reverend Heller's chaplain role will provide continuity for our youngest students as we unite on one campus and will enable us to connect the three divisions further.

Tim comes to ESD by way of Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, Maryland, which educates students from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. For the last five years, he served as chaplain and religion teacher and was a member of the school's executive team. Before WES, Tim was earning his Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School. He will be ordained a deacon on June 15, 2019, at the National Cathedral and anticipates his ordination to the priesthood by the end of the year. He is currently working on a Doctor of Ministry in Educational Leadership at Virginia Theological Seminary.

In speaking with Reverend Heller, she said what impressed her most about Tim is how clearly God is at the center of his life and how palpable his sense of calling to ministry was. We believe his enthusiasm and wealth of experience will inspire our students to discover their own sense of purpose and who God is calling them to become. To be sure, Amy is very excited to share in this ministry with Tim.

A San Antonio native, Tim graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Religion from Austin College in Sherman, Texas. He holds a Master of Arts in Education and Human Development from The George Washington University. Before joining the Executive Office of the President of the United States as Director of Continuity Policy for the Homeland Security Council, Tim served as a special assistant to the Office of the Republican Leader and the Office of the Speaker of the House in the U.S. House of Representatives. Other professional experience includes Senior Consultant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at Lockstep Consulting, LLC, and Associate Director for Strategic Planning, a Schedule C Appointee, for the DHS Office of Legislative Affairs. For the last ten years, Tim has been a board member for the Osgood Center for International Studies, a nonprofit educational organization that offers short-term foreign policy programs and experiential learning to students around the globe. Heeding his call from God to serve in ministry, including as a youth small-group leader, lay leader, and education chair throughout his time in Washington, D.C., Tim left his political career to pursue ordained ministry in The Episcopal Church.

Many thanks to The Reverend Canon Michael K. Harmuth for coming out of retirement this year. His willingness and grace allowed ESD the time to find the right fit for our community.

Please join me in welcoming Tim Kennedy to The Episcopal School of Dallas community.
