Sky Watch December 2018

Quarry: November turned drier and cooler after the big rains, and the colors are great this year!

Hawks are moving through, wild ducks and Cedar Waxwings are coming in.......and, the best time of the year for stargazing has arrived!

Evening Skies: The winter stars, Orion, the Pleiades, Sirius and company, rise around 9. Mars is in the west, following the sundown.

Last Full Moon of the year will be on the night of the 22nd, just after the solstice.

Morning Skies:  Venus is now the bright "Morning Star," high in the eastern sky before sunrise. The spring stars, the Big Dipper, Arcturus, and Spica are nearby, rising earlier each day.

Jupiter is behind the sun but will join Venus as a second morning star by the end of the month

December 21st is the longest night of the year: the Winter Solstice.

In the last reading of the Lessons and Carols it says:

".....and the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not."

The writer must have had starlight in mind! Here's the Hubble telescope photo of our neighbor galaxies .....millions of light years away. It is incomprehensible......

Head outdoors on a cold winter's night and see for yourself!!  PKL
