Fall SPC Sports Recap
Posted 11/27/2018 04:00PM

With fall SPC tournaments complete and winter teams beginning their seasons, there is a lot to celebrate and note in regards to ESD Athletics. For schedules and scores throughout the seasons, please visit the Team Pages section on the ESD website. You can also follow along with us on Twitter, @ESDAthletics, even if you do not have a Twitter account.

Pictured above are six members of the Class of 2019 who signed National Letters of Intent to continue playing lacrosse at the collegiate level. Learn more about these students here. The next signing days will take place on February 6 and April 17. A formal ceremony to celebrate and recognize all members from the Class of 2019 committing to play their sport collegiately will take place before school on April 18.

  • The varsity cheerleading team performed eight halftime routines and increased skills across the board. For the first time, 15 ESD cheerleaders performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
  • One of the many goals of the cheerleading program was to elevate school spirit by focusing on pep rallies. We were able to raise the bar and hosted ESD's first black light pep rally. We also held the Homecoming pep rally in the Jones Family Stadium with both Middle and Upper School students.

  • Crew is ESD's only fall and winter sport. We will recap Crew after their season ends in the spring.

Cross Country

  • Freshman Victoria Schmidt '22 earned All-SPC recognition with a sixth-place finish time of 19:11.80. The girls team finished 11th after freshmen Sydney Knodel '22, Gina Montagna '22, and Virginia Nussbaumer '22 and sophomore Charlotte Clark '21 rounded out the top 5 for ESD.
  • The boys team was led by senior Auden Rudelson '19, whose time of 17:10.20 was good for 25th place, just 5 spots off of All-SPC recognition. The team finished 13th with junior Alan Benitez '20, freshman Kai Robinson '22, and sophomores Max Beuck '21 and Henry Hobson '21 rounding out the top 5 for ESD.

Field Hockey

  • Overall record this season 14-4-2, the winningest season for ESD in over 10 years. Average 2.5 goals a game this season. Amazing group of 11 seniors that will be greatly missed.
  • Placed ninth at SPC after losing the first round. The team won their last two games.

  • Coach Williams challenged the varsity team to end their fall season with a five-game winning streak, and they came close. The team finished their season 5-3 overall, and missed their goal of five in a row by only a few points!
  • The team's proud victory over St. Mark's marked their 5th straight in a row. A fun fact: prior to Coach Williams taking the head coaching position at ESD, the Eagles had not defeated St. Mark's in football...ever!

  • ESD hosted an exciting SPC Girls Volleyball Championships on November 8-10. After earning a BYE in the opening round, ESD defeated St. Andrew's 3-0. After a tough loss to St. John's, ESD won the consolation final against Hockaday (3-2) and placed third in the tournament overall.
