The Merrell Road Campus has been buzzing with activity all summer, from the construction of the new Lower School to the revamping of the senior parking lot. One of the many exciting developments is the addition of the Hydroshed.
The Hydroshed, which has taken the place of the geodesic growing dome, is a hydroponic greenhouse that features all of the components of a professional greenhouse on a smaller scale. Since the structure employs hydroponics, plants are able to be grown without the use of soil and is entirely water-based.
With the Hydroshed now installed on ESD’s campus, SAGE has the opportunity to grow fresh fruits and vegetables just steps from the Daryl Johnston Family Dining Commons. It will also be utilized by a variety of classes across divisions, allowing students to have a hands-on learning experience
“I am so excited to introduce the Hydroshed to the students,” says fifth-grade science teacher, Ellen Neill. “In my class, we are already planning science experiment where they will do a comparison of soil versus water.”
Ms. Neill, pictured to the left with Hydroshed founders Amelia and Ben Von Kennel, has been hard at work harvesting seeds and will be ready to plant by early next week. Stay tuned to see how this exciting addition to our campus contributes to the ESD experience!
