Yesterday, several Middle and Upper School classes had the opportunity to hear from ESD alum Maya Harris '13 about her academic journey thus far, and just how exactly she got to where she is today.
After graduating from ESD, Harris attended Iowa State University where she majored in Chemical Engineering and minored in French. Next up, she will be pursuing her PhD at Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne in Switzerland, where she studied abroad for a year while enrolled in college.
While on campus she visited with French classes as well as, math and science classes, where she spoke about her experience studying those subjects abroad in a francophone country and the types of opportunities that exist when merging a talent like math and science with the passion for learning a foreign language.
"At ESD, I was exposed to everything from writing for Itinerary and participating in math competitions to winning art awards and French classes," Harris told the students in her visit to Madame Kharrat's French I class. "So not only did it prepare me really well for the math and science I had to take for my major once I got to college, but it also really ignited my interest in learning languages which led me to Switzerland."
She also expressed how much she valued the opportunity to be able to study abroad and urged students to consider it during their time in college. Her experience in Switzerland as an exchange student, she explained, is what led to her desire to return to Europe for her PhD.
We are thankful to have had Maya Harris on campus this week, and for her to give back to ESD in such a meaningful and inspiring way. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!
