Sixth Graders Engineer Flag Poles in Olympic-Themed Math Challenge
Posted 02/09/2018 11:00AM

This week, Mrs. Darnell’s Middle School math students were put to the test with an Olympic-sized challenge, just in time for tonight’s Olympic kick-off of the Opening Ceremony.

Drawing on their engineering and math lessons from this semester, students were instructed to raise an “Olympic flag” as high as possible with their given resources. With access to only 12 sheets of newspaper, one sheet of printer paper, three plastic drinking straws, string, and tape. The pole was required to be freestanding and the flag must be raised from the ground level of the pole. Once students had successfully engineered their flag poles, each group took height measurements which they then graphed and analyzed. Strategies varied, but the group with the tallest freestanding flag pole managed to reach 169 cm!

And the Olympic fun isn’t over! Over the next week, the sixth graders will also be choosing a couple of events from an Olympic sport and graphing the results on a shared Google Sheet. Each student has their own tab to track and graph the results of their chosen sport and events throughout the Olympics.

We love the creative way the current Olympic games were woven into this engineering and math project. Stay tuned for students’ graph results post-Olympics!
