January Sky Watch Report with Mr. Lutken
Posted 01/03/2018 09:00AM

Sky Watch for January .........HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018.........a cold start !!

January has two full moons: on the 1st for New Year's Day, and again on the 31st, a "Blue Moon".

Maybe that's a sign it will be a great year!?

Evening Skies:

"The Winter Circle" of some of the brightest stars in the sky is in full view most of the night. Orion is just inside it (see diagram to the right from earthsky).

Morning Skies:

Spring stars are up before sunrise now. The Big Dipper is high in the Northern Sky and the bright star Arcturus is almost overhead.

Jupiter is the big "Morning Star" in the southeast, with Mars very close by. Saturn will join them by the end of the month, and they'll line up along the plane of the ecliptic.

At the Quarry:

Ice is all around.........great birds, including huge flocks of Cedar Waxwings, with a Cooper's Hawk watching them.

Make the most of 2018 by getting outside for a look around every day!
