Sky Watch December 2017

Quarry:

A dry November and the Quarry is still low, but things are changing: Late Fall color on the Red Oaks, Willows, and Cottonwoods........The first Cedar Waxwings, wild ducks coming in........

And, this the best time of the year for star gazing!

Evening Skies

The bright winter stars, Orion, the Pleiades, Sirius and company rise around 9.

Last Full Moon of the year will be on the night of the 3rd.

Morning Skies

Jupiter is the "Morning Star," low in the eastern sky before sunrise. Just above are the spring stars: the Big Dipper, Arcturus, and Spica with Mars nearby, rising earlier each day.

Venus has disappeared behind the sun, but will show up as an evening star in late winter/early spring.

December 21st is the longest night of the year: the Winter Solstice.

In the last reading of the Lessons and Carols it says:

".....The light shined in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not."

It is pretty incomprehensible......Here's the Hubble telescope photo of our neighbor the Andromeda Galaxy below .....2,000,000 light years away!

Better yet, head outdoors on a cold winter's night and see for yourself!!  PKL
