As we welcome hundreds of alumni, parents, students, faculty and staff members, and friends to campus for Homecoming events and celebrate the founding of ESD, its history, and its future, ESD is honored to announce a gift of $250,000 to the Swann Family Endowment.
Made by The Reverend Canon Stephen B. Swann and Mrs. Carolyn Swann, Mr. Jonathan W. Gibson and Mrs. Mona Mennen Gibson, Mrs. Amy Swann Henning '89 and Mr. William L. Henning, Jr., Mr. George J. Mennen, Jr. and Mrs. Carole T. Mennen, and Mr. Stephen Swann '93 and Mrs. Lauren Swann, the Swann Family Endowment will help support the salary of ESD's Senior Chaplain.
"Gifts to the endowment are like planted trees that grow, nurture, and protect the future of ESD and its signature programs," said Founding Rector and Headmaster The Reverend Canon Stephen B. Swann. "My family and I wanted to demonstrate our love of this school by offering an endowment gift. By endowing the Senior Chaplain position, our gift helps fortify ESD's ability to remain true to our founding vision that every child is made in the image of God. What we do here is transformative and imperative."
Father Swann and a small group of Episcopalian leaders founded The Episcopal School of Dallas in 1974 with eight seventh-grade students in two rented classrooms. Today, ESD educates and inspires approximately 1,150 students in Beginner (age 3) through grade 12. Daily Chapel, Community, Ethical Decision Making, and Service to Others are ESD's Founding Tenets. Graduates are shaped by the School's signature programs, gifted faculty, and unwavering commitment to academic rigor and excellence, a strong sense of community, understanding of self, and faith-informed foundation of values. Father Swann served as Founding Rector and Headmaster for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 2012.
"I remember being by my father's side as he broke ground on this campus in 1978," said current parent Stephen Swann '93. "My family and I are deeply grateful and humbled by all who believed, supported, and nurtured ESD into the exemplary school it is today. It is incredible to see that the founding restless and entrepreneurial spirit remains and that our gift to the endowment will help sustain ESD's Mission and legacy for generations to come."
The Campaign for The Episcopal School of Dallas, which was publicly announced on September 22, 2017, is founded on a thoughtful and strategically phased plan that will bring ESD's shared vision to life. It has three priorities: increasing the endowment for greater sustainability, uniting the community on one campus by building an innovative new Lower School, and affirming today's educational experience through the Annual Fund. To date, more than $45,000,000 has been raised toward the $75,000,000 goal.
