ESD Wingmen Take Flight in Spirited Debut Season
Posted 10/27/2017 12:00PM

This football season, the varsity cheerleaders had some company on the sidelines to help cheer on our Eagles. The Wingmen, a group of five senior students who run ESD spirit flags across the field during game breaks and encourage crowd participation, made their debut this year in what has been a very spirited season.

Last spring, Braden Allen '18 approached varsity cheer coach and Alumni Relations Officer Megan Boyd '09 with an idea to create a new, effective, and fun way to get seniors and students more involved with athletic events. Allen, along with William Cooper '18, Harrison Frazar '18, Trevor Hobbs '18, Michael Mahoney '18, and Alec Miledi '18, worked hard with Ms. Boyd to bring together all of the elements that make up the group now known as "The Wingmen." They discussed everything from purpose and flag design, to uniforms and potential expenses.

"The Wingmen have done such a great job working with the cheerleaders and our coaching staff to complement what the girls are doing and encourage the crowd to stay spirited," explains Boyd. "The football games have been so energetic and fun, and everyone is really showing off their school spirit!"

For some members of the Wingmen, building the program goes beyond just promoting school spirit.

"As a senior, I really wanted to leave a legacy that thrives long after I leave ESD," explains Hobbs. "This new organization allowed me to help create a long-lasting tradition that generations of students will get to enjoy."

The Wingmen, in their coordinated button-downs, boots, and cowboy hats, have led the charge every Friday night this season, running ESD, Texas, and American flags ahead of the football team at the start of each game. In their quest to hype up the crowd and create a positive environment to support our school, they showcase a great embodiment of the Eagle spirit.

"Being a leader and conducting the pace of games as well as leading the football team out onto the field and running under the Friday night lights is an incredible experience that I wouldn't trade for anything," Allen said.

Come see our Wingmen in action in the last home football game of the season! ESD takes on Casady in the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Stadium tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. for their Homecoming game. See you there!
