Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder Applications for Summer 2018 Now Open!
Posted 09/19/2017 02:00PM

As of September 15, Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder began accepting applications for courses during summer 2018. This year’s overseas courses are in Bolivia, Cambodia, Kenya, Nepal, Nicaragua, Peru, and Tibet; domestic courses will be held in New Orleans, Pine Ridge, and Detroit. Students who are current 8th-graders may apply for the domestic programs. Upper school students (current grades 9-11 may apply for all courses.) The application is available online. See https://shouldertoshoulder.com/.

ESD is a member of the SStS Global Schools Coalition. Along with the other schools in the coalition, our students have some priority in admissions. This is not a guarantee of admission, however. SStS reserves one spot in each course for an ESD student each year; additional slots in a course may become available, depending on the overall pattern of applications in a particular year.

As a general rule, no more than two students from a particular school will be placed in the same course unless the course is undersubscribed and needs additional students. Likewise, priority for a particular course will be given to students who have not participated in that same course before.

In order to maximize your chances of success, you should complete your application as early as possible after September 15 (admissions are rolling), and you should be flexible in terms of which courses you apply for. The more options you give SStS, the greater the likelihood that you’ll be confirmed in a course. If you are not accepted for your first choice course, SStS will try to accommodate you in another course if at all possible. And, of course, all students who wish to participate in an SStS course must be in good disciplinary and academic standing at ESD.

Some financial assistance is available through SStS itself, and, through our participation in the Confucius Classroom program, additional assistance may also be available for the Tibet course.

Bob Bandoni, the founder and executive director of Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder will visit ESD for the day on Wednesday, October 4. An information session for interested students and parents will be held that evening in the Zachary Bell Theater from 6:30-7:30 p.m. For additional information in the meantime, contact Mrs. Fahrenbrook or Ms. Arnold.
