The Alchemist Inspires Eighth-Grade Scavenger Hunt and Self-Discovery
Posted 09/14/2017 03:00PM

Eighth graders wrapped up their lessons on their summer reading book, The Alchemist, with a bang! After reading the book this summer and studying it in English class the first few weeks of school, they put their knowledge to the test with a “Searching for the Omens” scavenger hunt based on what they have read and discussed this year regarding The Alchemist.

As students paired off, each group drew an initial question out of a hat to get their hunt going. The answer to that question led them to stones, referencing a recurrent theme from the book, hidden all over campus with questions written on them. The students were able to collaborate and review their knowledge of The Alchemist while dissecting the clues and contexts of each question.

It was a fun-filled day, with first, second, and third place winners rewarded with a “treasure”. While the students all had a blast participating in the scavenger hunt, The Alchemist also provided a platform for the eighth graders to begin the journey toward knowing themselves, which supports our Founding Tenet of Understanding of Self. The book even complemented the self-challenge and self-discovery students experienced on the recent Colorado trip.

We love the creative way our eighth graders were able to further explore the themes and lessons of their summer reading.
