Sky Watch August 2017

Hope everybody is having a good summer! Heat isn't too bad...even though we are in the "Dog Days" of August.

Evening skies: Two bright planets: Saturn is in the south in Scorpio. Jupiter is in the southwest, bright and low near Spica. Full Moon on the night of the 7th.

  • Solar Eclipse two weeks later on the 21st! It will be a good eclipse in Dallas...total farther north. In Dallas it'll start a little before noon, and be at the maximum a little after 1:00.
  • Don't look at it directly! Use a pinhole projection for safe viewing. Diagram below-- even two paper plates should do it.

Morning skies: Venus is the big morning star in the east, rising ahead of the sun with the winter stars (Orion and company). That's a good sign that fall is on the way!

At the Quarry: Chimney Swifts fill the air, cicadas are singing, water is low........time to look for Herons hunting in the shallows.

Get ready to start your engines for the year, but don't forget to head outside and look around when you can.
