The Eagles lost to Jesuit in a heartbreaker in the Texas State Division I Championship. ESD defeated The Woodlands 11-8 on Saturday in one semi final in a battle of unbeatens. The Eagles came back from a 3-4 deficit at the half to out score their opponents 7-4 in the 2nd half for the 11-8 win.
In the Woodlands victory, Shawn Tran, Michael Colpack, and Brandon Meaux all tallied 2 goals. Braden Rhone, Patrick Skalniak, Rives Castleman, Nakeie Montgomery, and Jack Loftus all scored once. Tran, Skalniak, and Meaux all added assists.
The Eagles jumped on Jesuit in the first quarter scoring 5 straight goals. Skalniak scored unassisted early in the first quarter and ESD pumped in four more in the first 9 minutes with goals by Meaux, Colpack, Montgomery, and Drew Wasserman.
A large part of this success was Eagle possessions by Trey Bender and his long pole wing mates of Paxson Marks, Scott Bower, Blair Oden, Andrew Griffin, and Chase Toledo on the face off. Bender won many draws clean but when it was a scrap, the poles came up with well timed checks and excellent ground balls. Jesuit finally got on the board in the 2nd quarter but the Eagles responded when Skalniak collected a pass from Tran to put ESD up 6-1 with 5:56 left in the half. Both Prescott King and the Jesuit goalie had awesome saves so the half ended with ESD up 6-1.
Jesuit came back as they scored 5 goals in the 3rd quarter while Montgomery added one for the Eagles, setting up the 4th quarter with ESD up 7-6. In the matter of 2 minutes, Jesuit scored on a man up goal then ESD won the face on a nice ground ball by Griffin and Oden took a close shot but the Jesuit goalie made a terrific save and the Rangers raced down field scoring a transition goal with just :09 left in the 3rd.
Jesuit tied the game at 7-7 with 9:39 left then scored another to make it 8-7 Rangers. Bender won the following draw clean, gave the ball to Montgomery who hit Meaux on a nice pass for an Eagle goal to tie the game again at 8-8. With 5:19 left Jesuit scores to go up 9-8. Great plays again by the Jesuit goalie to deny the Eagles multiple times. With 1:09 left Coach Kennedy calls a time out. Tran got off a good shot with :47 left and Loftus just narrowly missed the goal with :16 left and the Rangers ran out the clock to win the championship.
Heartbreaking loss for the Eagles but both teams treated the fans to a great game of lacrosse. ESD finishes their season at 18-1.
