The seniors spent the week before school preparing for the legacy they want to leave behind. The class of 2023 kicked off the back-to-school week with the 33rd annual Senior Retreat at Wolf Run. 

Eddie Eason, Director of Outdoor Education and ESD's longest-tenured faculty member, shared about the difference between tradition and a bad habit. Senior officers Patrick Burke, Alexa Grabow, Blair Brennan, and Hood Mathes led a discussion with the class about their goals and responsibility and how that plays into their legacy. Father Nate Bostian led the seniors in thinking about their hopes, fears, roles as leaders in the school, and their commitment to the community and to each other.

“Traditionally, the Senior Retreat is an opportunity for the class to bond, reflect on and prepare for their responsibility as the community's culture shapers, and get ready for a year of "lasts." 
Henry Heil, Head of Upper School, shared. “It was an unforgettable day and one of our best retreats in recent memory. The Class of 2023 is well prepared for this year and beyond!”

Later in the week, seniors participated in the annual tradition of painting their parking spaces in the Senior Lot. “[Painting our spaces] is another fun tradition that we have.” Senior Alexa Grabow said. “You look at the lot, and everyone is so different with their approach and creativity. It’s a great way to get to know everyone’s personality!”

To kick off the school year, senior parents celebrated the last first day at ESD with the tradition of a senior breakfast. The class of 2023 congregated in the senior courtyard to share their first meal together as seniors. They then celebrated the younger students by creating a tunnel for them to pass through on the way to their first class.

To the Class of 2023, it’s going to be a great year, and we can’t wait to see the legacy you leave behind.
