David Tollison, Associate Director of Athletics and Golf Program Director
What motivated and inspired you to teach?
I got into coaching and teaching because of the unbelievable opportunity to make a positive and meaningful impact on the lives of young men and women. As I think back to the people who were my greatest mentors growing up--outside of my parents-- it was my coaches and teachers.
Why are you excited to come to ESD every day?
I have enjoyed coming to ESD everyday for the past 21 years because of the awesome students, families, and colleagues I've been blessed to know and be around. Additionally, for the past 13 years, I've been able to witness first-hand the joy of my daughters' ESD experience.
Beyond your subject-area or discipline, what life lesson do you want your students to learn in your classroom?
One of the most important lessons I can pass along is the power of kindness and humility. It doesn't take much effort to be kind to others. So smile, encourage and praise others, and be humble--you never know when you may enrich the lives of others.
Tell us a fun or interesting fact about yourself!
My biggest hobby right now is golf and the thing I enjoy most outside of work is watching my daughters play sports! Interesting fact: I once played all 9 positions in a professional minor league baseball game.
What is your favorite book and why?
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. It's an inspirational story of courage, perseverance, and the amazing power of the human mind.
If you could have dinner with three people, alive or not, who would they be and why?
I would have to say my family. My daughters, Lauren and Lily, will be off to college soon so any chance my wife and I have to enjoy a family dinner is special.
