Second Annual "Pin It On" Ceremony Welcomes Fifth Graders to New Division
Staff
ESD Tradition: Pin It On

ESD’s second annual Pin It On ceremony was held earlier today in All Saints Chapel. Created in 2018 by middle and upper school students, Pin It On is a rite of passage ceremony designed to help define and strengthen our bond as One Campus, One Community. Even as a newer tradition, this ceremony has great significance and meaning within the life of our school community as it truly represents the recent uniting of our school on one campus.

The Student Advisory Council considered four key themes as they created this symbolic opportunity:

  1. The importance of the transition from lower to middle school and the new experiences and privileges that come with it.
  2. The value of class unity and the camaraderie, bonds, and friendships that evolve and develop as a student progresses through our school.
  3. The significance of instilling in each student a sense of belonging, and pride for their class and school.
  4. And, the spirit of what it means to share in the ESD identity.

In today's ceremony, fifth graders received advice from the ninth graders and student-designed pins specific to their graduation year to be worn on the lapel of their formal uniform blazers. With no blazers this year, the pins may be attached to backpacks or taken home for safekeeping until blazers return. The design is specific to the Classes of 2024 and 2028, as it has both class's graduation years, and signifies a special link the classes will always share. The pin’s design is anchored by ESD’s shield and three crosses representing the original Founding Tenets.

“It is an exciting and special moment for these two classes and our school,” said Associate Head of School Ruth Burke. “Our hope is this special commemorative pin will be worn on students’ blazers from now through their graduation.”
