Fourth-Grade Inventors Share Ideas at Invention Convention
Staff

Starting at the beginning of the year, Science & Design combined the scientific method and scientific concepts with the Design Thinking Process (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test), where students went through several rounds of researching, ideating, and prototyping for different problems around campus.

After researching several existing inventions, the fourth graders worked individually or with partners (their choice) to create their own inventions.  Classes pondered how inventions could emerge from combining two existing items.  They also brainstormed different problems that needed solving and even interviewed peers and adults about issues or frustrations they experience in everyday life.

Students were responsible for coming up with an original idea, a company name, and designing a tri-fold board advertising their invention.  Many also created company logos, t-shirts, and even prototypes.

They were thoroughly engaged throughout this student-driven project which culminated in sharing their ideas with peers and parents.

The project allowed students to celebrate the design and entrepreneurial spirit.  It allowed fourth graders to demonstrate independence and develop strong presentation skills, and they thrived!
