Congratulations to Henry Heil

November 18, 2022

Dear ESD Community,

I am pleased to share with you that our friend and colleague, Head of Upper School Henry Heil, has been named the next Head of School at the Brookstone School in Columbus, Georgia (Brookstone announcement). He will begin his service at Brookstone on July 1, 2023. Until then, he will continue his work leading ESD’s upper school.

Founded in 1951, Brookstone serves a student body of 820 in grades 3K through 12 across four divisions. Its core values – loyalty, courage, wisdom, honor, service, respect, and leadership – guide the educational program and daily interactions among students and adults. The school is proud of its highly developed and intentional focus on servant leadership and character development, preparing its students for lives of engagement and service to others.

Henry will leave ESD after six outstanding years as Head of Upper School. His strong commitment to student-centered leadership made an important impact on our community and the lives of many of our current students and graduates. During his time at ESD, he led important revisions to our honor system and introduced a student-led discipline council. Most symbolic of Henry’s priorities as an educator were his annual improvements to our student health wellness and learning support program. Henry’s legacy will be a culture of relational connection and care throughout the upper school. This atmosphere allowed him to have the tough conversation when needed for the benefit of the children in his division.

About his six years at ESD, Henry said, “It has been an honor and privilege to serve and be a member of this incredible community. When my family and I arrived here in the summer of 2017, ESD welcomed us with open arms. They have become our family and ESD has become our home. Students, parents, alums, and friends - their collective commitment to ensuring that ESD remains an unrivaled school community is inspirational to me and my family. We will cherish the time we have spent here forever. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I am eternally grateful for the opportunity I have had to partner with them and will continue to lean on their love for this remarkable place to guide me for the remainder of the school year.”

We are deeply indebted to Henry for his contribution to our school’s growth. Having strong educators like Henry in our midst carries with it the chance that they will leave for exciting opportunities like Brookstone. We see these appointments as a sign of our institutional strength.

Our search for a new Head of Upper School will begin in earnest immediately. As information and details on the process and timing become available, we will share them with you. We expect an outstanding candidate pool to emerge.

Onward and upward,

Dave Baad
