About the Work: For Black History Month, our Beginners studied the Haitian-Puerto Rican artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Much of Basquiat’s art was influenced by anatomy. Students made their own renditions of his “Cabeza” piece by using shades of orange and yellow to paint a loose background. Next, they used black paint to create shapes that formed a person. Finally, Beginners used oil pastels to add various body parts, such as hair, eyes, a mouth, a nose, ribs, a heart, circulating blood, bones, stomachs, and more.
