New York Times' Bestselling Author, Jennifer Breheny Wallace, Visits The Episcopal School of Dallas for Discussions about Mattering - The Episcopal School of Dallas | Best Private Schools in Dallas

September 15, 2025

A sense of excitement and profound thought filled the air last week as renowned New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Breheny Wallace visited our campus to deliver a powerful message on the topic of mattering. The author's visit, which included separate sessions with upper school students, faculty and staff, and parents, provided a unique opportunity for our entire community to reflect on what it truly means to add value to the lives of others.

Wallace, whose most recent book, Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic—and What We Can Do About It, challenges achievement culture in affluent communities and has captivated audiences with a fresh perspective. The author emphasized that our feeling of belonging and importance isn't tied to our achievements, grades, or the tasks we check off a list. Instead, a person's sense of mattering is measured by their ability to positively impact the people around them.

In a special session for juniors and seniors, the author’s message resonated deeply, especially as students prepare for life beyond high school. The author encouraged students to shift their focus from the ranking of their college admission to the cultivation of meaningful relationships and their individual “fit” on a college campus. This reminder highlighted the importance of empathy and compassion over competition.

Faculty and staff also engaged in a thought-provoking conversation with Wallace, discussing how to foster a school environment where every individual feels seen, heard, and valued. The author's insights reinforced our commitment to creating a community where the well-being of each member is a top priority and where genuine connections are the foundation of learning and growth.

Finally, in a session with parents, Wallace provided practical advice on how to reinforce these values at home. The author's discussion centered on helping children understand that their worth is inherent and not dependent on their successes. Parents said they left with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared understanding of how to model this powerful concept for their families.

The visit from Wallace was more than just a speaking engagement; it was a meaningful experience that enriched our school community. The author’s message about the true meaning of mattering will undoubtedly continue to inspire our students, faculty, and parents for years to come.

Thank you to the ESD Parents’ Association for hosting such a wonderful Speaker Series
