How ESD's Campfire Program Helps Students Thrive–No Matter Where They Begin

At The Episcopal School of Dallas, we believe that the strength of an independent school lies not only in its academics but in its ability to welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds, school experiences, and cultures.

At ESD, it is our responsibility to ensure that every student feels confident navigating the academic, social, and cultural landscape of an independent school.
The Campfire Program was born out of this necessity.
Inspired by the vision of our Founding Rector and Headmaster, The Reverend Canon Stephen B. Swann—who believed that “around the campfire, everyone is on equal footing”—the Campfire Program provides an additional layer of support for students who are new to independent school culture.
Campfire works in conjunction with the existing ESD advisory program and affinity groups to ensure students and families—regardless of background—have what they need for a successful transition and a fulfilling ESD experience.
Through early onboarding, ongoing academic and social guidance, and family programming, Campfire has become a valuable touchpoint for students who benefit from a structured support network. Many transition from public school backgrounds; others are navigating a new city, a new educational model, or a significant shift in expectations.
Campfire exists to make that transition feel less like a leap and more like a welcome.
Students and families who participate receive personalized onboarding, ongoing academic and social support, check-ins with trained guides, and family events that provide community-building touchpoints. These support structures increase confidence, foster stronger academic habits, deepen a sense of belonging, and create families who feel genuinely connected to the community.
“Every time I see a student settle in, find their voice, and truly feel at home here, I’m reminded that Campfire is not just a program—it’s the living legacy of Father Swann’s original vision and Dave Baad’s commitment to carrying it forward,” shares Corey Henderson, Campfire Program Director. “Their belief in a community where everyone belongs is exactly what we see reflected in our Campfire students and families.”
At ESD, we see Campfire as a model for how independent schools can honor their mission, expand access, and ensure that every student—no matter where they begin—can thrive.
