An Unforgettable Spanish Journey: From Salamanca's Classrooms to Andalusia's Heart
Written by Upper School Spanish Teacher Marcela Garcini.
Nineteen high school students embarked on an unforgettable Spanish adventure, trading their typical classroom desks for the historic streets of Spain. Their typical field trip was transformed into a deep dive, exploring the Spanish language and experiencing a vibrant cultural immersion.
The journey began in Salamanca, a city renowned for its stunning architecture and prestigious university. For two weeks, students attended the Hispano Continental School, where they tackled intensive Spanish language courses. Beyond all the textbooks, the students were fully immersed, practicing their skills daily while exploring the city's charming squares and ancient cathedrals.
After their academic pursuits, the real adventure began. Accompanied by faculty members Marcela Garcini, Francisco Amparan, and Gabriela Hansen, the group journeyed south to experience the heart of Spain. Their itinerary was packed with iconic cities, each offering a unique glimpse into the country’s rich history. They explored the sun-drenched streets of Sevilla, marveled at the Mezquita in Córdoba, and walked in the footsteps of ancient Romans in Mérida. The students also visited the walled city of Ávila, the Roman aqueduct in Segovia, the breathtaking Alhambra in Granada, the medieval streets of Toledo, and the bustling capital of Madrid.
A standout highlight for many was witnessing the profound historical and cultural fusion of southern Spain; the seamless blend of architecture and customs left behind by the Jewish and Muslim communities captivated many students. This powerful testament to centuries of shared history offered a unique and impactful lesson in cultural diversity and historical coexistence, making it a truly enriching experience that went far beyond the classroom.
The trip successfully combined rigorous language learning with an incredible cultural exploration, leaving the students with new skills, lifelong memories, and a deeper appreciation for the world.
