Upper School History and Religious Studies

Designed to provide students with a working knowledge of how political, social, economic, and cultural systems fit into contemporary world affairs, subject mastery goals reflect an attempt to foster an understanding of the past and establish its relationship to the present. The development of critical thinking skills is central to all courses.

In addition to our graduation requirements, a variety of elective courses challenge students to reflect on morality and ethics in modern society, the meaning and purpose of life, and the significance and influence of the Bible in Western culture. Living in a world frequently impacted by religious intolerance, students are better equipped to respond intelligently when they are familiar with foundational beliefs and practices of a variety of religious traditions, including their own. ESD also offers a number of electives related to the study of government.
