June/July Sky Watch Report from Mr. Lutken
Sky Watch June 2017
Rain in May....always too much or not enough…..Barn Swallows and Herons at the Quarry! Summer Solstice in 3 weeks on June 21st.
Evenings: After dark, two bright planets: Jupiter leads the way high in the SW near the star Spica. Saturn rises just after sunset and is up most of the night.
The Summer Triangle (Earthsky diagram below) rises farther north about the same time. The Milky Way runs through it, from Cassiopeia north to south through Cygnus the swan and on down to Sagittarius at the center of our galaxy....far,far away..........
Full Moon in June is on the 9th. July's is on the 8th.
Venus is the morning star this summer. As the weeks go by we'll begin to see the stars of Fall and Winter in the early morning.
Special note........Solar Eclipse coming on August 21st...partial in Dallas....total farther north! More on that later.
Have a great summer, get outdoors and take a look!!
