Chess Board Becomes Popular Pastime Puzzle in Senior Hall

Daniel Puckett ’17 had never really been into chess, but when his boss last summer made him play every day during their lunch break, it began to pique his interest.

Puckett had a heavy course load during second semester, and was discouraged when he was overloaded with distractions while studying in Senior Hall. So, one day, he brought in a chess board in hopes of offering an alternative focus for other students and, in turn, a quieter area to study.

“It worked really well,” said Puckett. “And a while after I brought it in, I started to get pretty good at chess and decided I wanted to try something more difficult.”

The game he turned to was a Japanese version of chess that’s more complicated than our American version, called shogi. Now that the school year is winding down, there is more time for students to focus and enjoy learning this new game during breaks.
