Listed below are suggested community service projects. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Students are welcome to volunteer for any non-profit organization. Students may utilize the online database of the Volunteer Center of North Texas find out about youth volunteer opportunities throughout the Metroplex. The Arc of Dallas offers a summer Adventure Camp for kids with special needs and their siblings, ages 5-21. Volunteers (ages 15 +) are needed to serve as camp counselors. The Arthritis Foundation, North Texas Chapter needs volunteers to serve as information specialists to provide information and referral services over the phone and to educate people at various health fairs. Brother Bill’s Helping Hand is a social service agency committed to enriching the lives of men, women, and children in west Dallas. Volunteers are needed Monday-Friday to stock the food pantry, work with children, help with yard work, prepare for upcoming programs, and assist clients. - Wednesdays & Thursdays, 10am-12:30pm – Volunteers are needed to sack groceries and make crafts with young children.
- Junior Soccer Clinic -- June 7-9 from 8:00-1:00– Serve as junior coaches at a 3 day soccer camp for children. Volunteers must be able to coach all 3 days of the clinic.
- Saturday, August 25, 10:00-1:00 – Back to School Carnival – Volunteers are needed to distribute school supplies and help with the back to school party for elementary school aged children.
Cancer Support Community (formerly Gilda's Club) offers a free summer camp for kids called Camp Noogie. The camp is both for children whose family members have a cancer diagnosis. Camp will be July 16-30 from 10:00-12:00 and each day will have a different theme, including crafts, cooking, science, and music. Volunteers are needed to choose a day of camp and theme and plan, organize, and implement the activities. This opportunity offers great leadership and experience. Community Partners of Dallas is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the safety and restoring dignity to abused and neglected children by providing resources to the caseworkers of Dallas County Child Protective Services. Crossroads Community Services is an urban outreach center in downtown Dallas. Volunteers are needed to assist in the food pantry and the clothing closet and to assist with clerical work. The Dallas Arboretum is hosting the 2012 Dale Chihuly Exhibit May 5-November 5. Volunteers are needed daily from 9:00-5:00 to serve as art hosts. Volunteers will be needed to meet and greet visitors, direct Arboretum guests, and help in the gift store.

The Dallas Children’s Theater relies on volunteers to usher on the weekends during their live theater productions. Performances this summer will run through July 17th. They also use the summertime to work on office maintenance and are always looking for volunteers to help with filing, photocopying, and organizing. The Dallas Public Library needs students to volunteer at any library branch over the summer. Volunteers will assist by helping with programming, shelving and sorting books, and creating displays. Equest is a therapeutic riding program in Wylie, TX that is in need of summer volunteers for their summer program. Volunteer orientations are scheduled for June 2nd and June 9th from 8:30-2:30. The Family Place is an organization that offers residential and not-residential services to victims of domestic violence. They welcome students 15 years old or older to work with our children in group therapy, with a commitment of 1 ½ hours per week. Volunteers age 16 and older are needed at The Family Place Resale Shop for four hour shifts. Future Leaders Program – The Bickel and Brewer Foundation sponsors a Future Leaders Program for gifted and talented students from DISD in hopes that each student will graduate from high school and college and take their place as leaders in the community. The Future Leaders Program offers a summer program for DISD students during the month of June. Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors and student assistants. Genesis Women’s Shelter offers volunteers age 15 and up an opportunity to spend 1 hour with the children at our shelter or transitional housing facility, playing or facilitating a structured activity. Hunger Busters is a non-profit organization providing meals to food-insecure children in Dallas. Individuals and groups are welcome to volunteer in our kitchen year-round, where we need help preparing thousands of meals for hungry kids each week. Jubilee Park and Community Center needs volunteers for their summer enrichment program, Jubilee around the World, for neighborhood children. One week sessions will be offered from June 11- August 10. The Museum of Nature and Science is seeking volunteers to assist with their summer Discovery Days. Volunteers are needed to assist with these special program days by leading a wide range of arts and crafts projects related to each theme. Up to 50 volunteers are needed for each fun filled day. North Dallas Shared Ministries is a social service organization that helps people help themselves. - Monday, August 27, from 9:00-5:00 – Volunteers are needed to assist with the distribution of 2,500 boxes of school supplies. Various shifts are available.
- During the week of August 20, volunteers are needed to assist with the distribution of school uniforms from 9:30-4:30. Various shifts are available each day.
The North Texas Food Bank passionately pursues a hunger-free community by distributing food to more than 300 agencies in the Dallas area. Our widest volunteer opportunity is in our warehouse sorting and boxing food for distribution. A complete listing of all volunteer opportunities is on the NTFB website. Look there for scheduling specifics or contact volunteer@ntfb.org. Groups and individuals please schedule weekday warehouse volunteer times at least one week in advance.
Preston Hollow Presbyterian School needs volunteers to assist with their summer language lab program for children with learning differences. Lab runs from 8:00-12:30 June 4-29 and July 16-August 10. Volunteers must be 15 years old or older and must be available for at least 3 of the 4 weeks in order to secure the volunteer placement. Project Transformation sponsors day camps for over 800 underserved children and youth at 8 sites throughout the Dallas area. Volunteers are needed to serve as reading tutors Monday-Thursday from 9:30-12:00 from June 4-July 24. The Senior Source – The Senior Source is looking for volunteers to serve as Friendly Visitors at a local nursing home or assisted living facility in Dallas County. Children under the age of 18 may require adult supervision. Most nursing homes require that you complete an application and background check before volunteering. However, if you are part of a group, the nursing homes will often waive the application and background check. The program is very flexible and tailored to the needs of the volunteer. Shakespeare Dallas relies on volunteers ages 16 years old or older to serve as greeters and ushers during their summer Shakespeare in the Park performances at Samuell-Grand Amphitheater from 6:30-8:30. Visiting Nurse Association/Meals on Wheels needs summer volunteers for the projects listed below. Contact Betsy Cox at 214.689.2210 or coxbe@vnatexas.org.
- Make holiday greeting cards for homebound elderly and disabled clients of the VNA Meals on Wheels program. You can choose the number of cards you would like to make and make them at home.
- Serve as substitute drivers to deliver meals on weekdays in the summer. Volunteers are needed to deliver a route of 10-12 meals in the late morning hours a few times per month. Students may want to do this with a parent or another adult.
- Wrap gifts at the “Christmas in August” event on Tuesday, August 7, from 10:00-1:00
Voice of Hope Ministries Voice of Hope is a social service agency in the West Dallas area. Help is needed to serve as summer day camp counselors from June 8-August 7.
